FORT MYERS: At face value, Amendment 2 seems straightforward - that marriage is between a man and a woman. But it's the second clause of the amendment that has opponents worried.

Your definition of marriage will go a long way toward shaping your vote on Amendment 2.

"It's just going to protect what marriage has always been. And the way it has always been defined in the State of Florida, and for that matter all of civilization - is between a man and a woman," said Clayton Cloer of the First Baptist Church of Central Florida.

The amendment defines marriage as being between "one man and one woman as husband and wife."

Opponents of the amendment say the measure is too invasive.

"Floridians should be able to decide between themselves, their family, and their clergy. We don't need more government intrusion into people's lives," said Michael Kenny, an opponent of Amendment 2.

Florida already has several laws banning gay marriage, but supporters argue a constitutional amendment provides more protection from legal challenges.

"God created men and women. He did not create men to be with men and women to be with women - he created men and women and that is how it should be," said Margo Snyder of Crossroads Community Church.

Opponents say they are concerned Amendment 2 would threaten legal, economic and health benefits of people in domestic partnerships - many of which, according to Kenny are heterosexual.

"They could lose their health insurance benefits if this amendment were to pass. How is it good government to add 200,000 to the roles of the uninsured?" asked Kenny.

The Supreme Court ruled the amendment does not include domestic partnerships. But if voters pass it, that ruling could be challenged.
