Protestors gather around City Hall to protest ban on gay marriage

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Proposition 8 protests have become a national movement, and the opposition to the ban on gay marriage in California has spread to the First Coast.

Dozens of supporters of gay rights are protesting at City Hall in downtown Jacksonville Saturday afternoon.

Same-sex marriage supporters have planned simultaneous protests in all 50 states, as well as in cities in Canada, England and Australia.

When voters passed Proposition 8 on election day, they overruled a California Supreme Court decision in May that legalized same-sex marriage.

Local protestors say they also want to show their opposition to the passage of Amendment 2.

Amendment 2, an amendment to the Florida Constitution on the Nov. 4 ballot, defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

It passed with more than 62 percent support.
