According to the Minnesota Independent,
"In 2004, Buju Banton was investigated over the beatings of six gay men in Jamaica's capital city of Kingston; he was acquitted in 2006 for lack of evidence. Human rights activists pointed out at the time that Jamaican authorities tend not to handle such cases aggressively".
It's no secret Jamaica has a reputation for being
ant-gay and police turn a blind eye to anti-gay bashing and even murders. As far
as I'm concerned, this homophobic performer should stay in Jamaica, there's no
place for such an ant-gay performer in the States.
Buju Banton's label and handlers, Gargamel Music claim, "Buju Banton was all of 15-years-old when he wrote "Boom Bye Bye" in response to a widely publicized man/boy rape case in Jamaica. It was "not a call to violence". After a quick search of YouTube, I found Buju Banton's Fire Burn Batty Concert Video posted September 2, 2009, he certainly looks a lot older than all of 15-years-old.
Buju Banton's management claims he no longer sings, "Boom Bye Bye". This video link proves otherwise (VIDEO BUJU BANTON FIRE BURN BATTY- Posted September 02, 2009). In this version, Banton declares, "There is no end to the war between me and faggots!"
View the video and listen to the lyrics for yourself. I know it may be difficult to understand him, except when he says, "There is no end to the war between me and faggots!", see lyrics translation below.
Lyrics of Buju Banton's Boom Bye
[Jamaican patois, with standard English translation and explanation]
Boom Bye Bye Boom [as in gun sound] goodbye, goodbye [as in we won't be seeing you again, you're dead]
Inna batty bwoy head
In a queer's head
Rude bwoy no promote no nasty man
Rude boys don't promote no queer men
Dem haffi dead
They have to die
Send fi di matic an
Send for the automatic [gun] and
Di Uzi instead
The Uzi instead
Shoot dem no come if we shot dem
Shoot them, don't come if we shoot them
[as in don't come to help them]
Guy come near we
If a man comes near me
Then his skin must peel
Then his skin must peel
[as in pour acid over him]
Burn him up bad like an old tyre wheel
Burn him up badly, like you would burn an old tyre wheel

Silence = Death.
We must always take a stand and speak out against hate, whether by speech or song lyrics. If such lyrics incites violence against one members of our community, can we afford to remain silent?
