Helene Milman and Wayne Rauen
Wayne and Helene have been together for 24 years and are unmarried by choice. They enjoy the benefits of being registered Domestic Partners in Broward County, including the ability to visit each other in the hospital and share health care benefits.
Helene Milman, Democrat:
"We are sad and worried to see this amendment move forward because we don't want to be put in a position where our health care or government benefits could be threatened. And we believe that's exactly what could happen if this amendment passes.
"We just want to live our lives together and not have the government telling us our relationship isn't good enough to be recognized in Florida."
Wayne Rauen, Republican:
"When Helene was in the hospital with breast cancer, they wouldn't let me in to see her until I proved we are domestic partners. I don't understand why the government cares who I can see in the hospital and who I can't.
"It's just not right to force us and so many seniors like us to choose between basic things like hospital visitation rights and making ends meet."

Straight Couple Fights Gay-Marriage Ban
July 10, 2007
The face of the opposition to a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage is an old, unmarried Sunrise couple.
Wayne Rauen and Helene Milman, together for 23 years, worry that the amendment could wipe out their domestic partner benefits they get under Broward County law.
They told their story Tuesday in support of Florida Red and Blue, a new statewide group that aims to beat back the proposed amendment. By focusing on the ban's potential repercussions for live-in partners -- instead of on the polarizing question of gay marriage -- opponents are trying to duplicate their success last year in Arizona, the first state to reject a same-sex marriage ban.Read Complete Article Click Here.

The Marriage between Church and State
January 14, 2008
In response to the upcoming primary elections, there will be a choice on a Florida state constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. In a handful of other states, there will be balloting for referendums. As a priest, I have watched this debate for a number of years. What I have concluded, is the separation of church and state no longer exists. I have watched religious groups successfully force their views into political office long enough and my sin is that I have remained silent until now.
For starters, same sex marriage is already illegal in Florida. This proposed constitutional change is an attempt to take away basic human rights, veiled by a curtain of so called morality. If you don't believe this, keep reading.
Up until 1967, it would have been illegal for me to marry my wife in a number of U.S. states (including Florida). Our interracial marriage was once thought of and declared to be an abomination as states passed laws forbidding such marriages. There were pushes along the way to bring constitutional amendments supporting such racially based hatred. Every statement issued today which discriminates against any legal citizen in the name of “sanctity” was once assigned to people like my wife and me.
Regardless of whether or not I support a religious and moral ideology, I will not have the state dictating to me as to whom I can minister any sacrament. The church should be self determinate within its own structure. By the same token, no religious body should be able to indoctrinate through the means of a secular ballot.
One of the problems with humanity is a belief that we can pick and choose certain parts of holiness and ignore and reject others without any consequence. There are far more detrimental moral issues than sexual orientation worthy of outcry and response. Redirecting the focus from the fact that people suffer and die every day because of poverty is perhaps the worst moral crime we have ever committed. And while I won’t be elevating the civil union of any gay couple to a sacrament of the church, the fact is that I won’t be the one who denies them their civil liberties and rights because of it on any ballot, ever.
In Christ, I remain,
Rev. Fr. Mark J. Niznik

More than 500 strong, an army of Fairness for All Families volunteers fanned out across the state to educate voters on Primary Day 08. Another 110 generous contributors, who couldn't take the day off, stepped up and sponsored our canvassers with donations that provided water, T-shirts, granola bars, and materials to our volunteers.
Drawn from the more than 200 civil rights, faith, senior and campus and community organizations that make up the Fairness for All Families Campaign, these volunteers and donors embody the far ranging impact of the deceptively named "Florida Marriage Protection Amendment #2".
If passed, it would strip away essential benefits from all unmarried Floridians - blocking the passage of civil unions and repealing existing domestic partnership protections vital to thousands of families.
All around, the "Primary Day of Action" was empowering. But, instead of telling you about that, we thought we'd let our volunteers share their experience with you.
As one of the proud statewide volunteers, I couldn't have been more pleased with the large number of voters I spoke with, who not only opposed Amendment 2, but, pledged to Vote No On Amendment 2. It was a rewarding opportunity to be able to be apart of this wonderful group of dedicated people. They braved the 90 degree heat and talked to thousands of voters. I hope you will join us during Early Voting Starting October 29th, on General Election day November 4th. Please go to http://www.votenoon2.com and sight up today to be a poll volunteer. Together we can and will defeat Amendment 2. - R. Zeke Fread ~ Fairness For All Families - Vote No On 2 Tampa Bay Steering Committee

They Wouldn't Let Her Say Goodbye.
Here's a newspaper account of the shocking story of Washington State resident Janice Langbehn, whose partner Lisa Pond died in Florida one year ago:
"... Pond, Langbehn's partner for nearly 18 years, was stricken in Miami with a brain aneurysm and died. Langbehn, a social worker, said officials at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital did not recognize her or their jointly adopted children as part of Pond's family... Langbehn said she was informed by a social worker that they were in an 'anti-gay state' and that they needed legal paperwork before Langbehn could see Pond." The Olympian, of Olympia, Washington, June 17, 2007
Janice didn't get to say goodbye. In Florida her family relationship was refused any recognition even in their hour of direst need.
Retired Florida residents Ed Lessen and Clarice Pollock have been together in a long-term domestic partnership "based on mutual love and respect" for 30 years. "We want to be able to take care of each other and visit each other in the hospital, if it should come to that," says Clarice. "This amendment will take that away."
In November, Floridians will be forced to vote on a ballot measure that would enshrine this kind of discrimination forever in the Florida Constitution and could ban benefits for all unmarried partners.
It's Valentine's Day, the time of year when we focus on love. It's time we stop this madness right here and now in Florida. With your support, we can defeat Florida Amendment #2 on November 4, 2008.
For Janice and her children, for Ed and Clarice and for all the others who need us to stand up and protect their right to care for their loved ones, I am asking you to make a donation of $100 or more to Fairness for All Families.
We can't abdicate this opportunity that's now before us. We must show our strength and get ahead of the opposition's deliberately confusing and deceptive message.
Include discrimination in the Florida Constitution? Never! Together, we'll mount the largest effort ever to defend our freedom to live and love.
